The Fire Buugeng takes the most distinctive prop in flow arts and extends it into flame. Aluminum body, 40 cm of 16 mm Kevlar rope on each blade, one-piece construction built to stay together no matter how you move. Designed for performers with established fire experience who are ready to bring the full expressive language of the buugeng to a live performance.
Please read our fire safety instructions before spinning.
Kevlar size affects burn time, flame size, and how the prop handles. Both options require solid fire spinning experience – this is a decision between two performance profiles, not between “beginner” and “advanced.”
10 mm Kevlar produces a moderate flame with lighter weight and quicker response. Burn time is 1:30-2 minutes. A good choice if you’re transitioning into fire spinning from daytime practice, or if you prefer a more controlled flame for tighter movements.
16 mm Kevlar produces a richer, fuller flame that bu. The extra fuel capacity means bigger flames, more heat, and more visual impact – but also more demand on your technique. Best for performers with established fire experience who can handle larger flames safely.
Match your choice to your skill level and what you want from the prop
Flame-resistant Kevlar protection for your arms without restricting movement.
The Buugeng is one of the most distinctive object manipulation props in flow arts. Its curved S shape earned it the alternative name S-staff, though the original idea comes from two half circles flipped and joined at the centre.
The prop was first introduced to the juggling and circus world by American juggler Michael Moschen. The name Buugeng came later, coined by Japanese artist Dai Zaobab, who refined the shape into the form performers recognise today. The word combines two Japanese terms: Buu (martial art) and Geng (illusion).
One-piece construction. Magnetic Buugengs can separate mid-spin. With flame on both ends, that’s not a risk worth taking. Ours is a single solid piece, weighted evenly, built to stay together no matter how you move.
Safer grip, by design. Our grip has a more defined square profile than most alternatives, so you can feel exactly how the prop is oriented through your hand. Better awareness means fewer mistakes and less chance of hitting yourself.
Custom Kevlar attachment. We designed our own system for securing the Kevlar rope to the aluminum body. It holds firmly under heat, but can be quickly replaced when the rope wears out. No special tools, no shipping it back, no downtime.
Same grip as Pyroterra Lighttoys. Adapted from Pyroterra Lighttoys with their approval, the grip gives you reliable hold in humid, sweaty, or cold conditions where smooth props fail.
Burn time for fire props is influenced by a variety of factors. Understanding these elements helps you get the best performance and stay safe. Here’s what affects your burn time:
Fire spinning is a hazardous activity by definition. The only way to completely avoid harm is to not spin with fire at all. That said, using proper safety gear, like our Kevlar sleeve and Kevlar hat, and following the right procedures significantly reduces the risk of injury. Here’s how to minimise the hazards.
Before every session, inspect your prop. Check that no Kevlar is coming loose from the wick. If you see stray threads, cut them off with sharp scissors before lighting. Check the rest of your fire prop for any loose or damaged parts.
Make sure you have the right safety gear on hand: a fire blanket and a damp towel or duvet at minimum. A fire extinguisher rated for flammable liquids is a useful addition if you have one. Never use a water extinguisher on burning fuel – it will spread the fire.
Finally, check yourself. Are you in good mental and physical condition? Alert and focused? Honesty here matters. Fire spinning and substances don’t mix. If you’ve had alcohol, even a little, save the burn for another night. Impaired judgement is how accidents happen.
What you wear while fire spinning matters. Choose natural fibres that fit close to the body but aren’t restrictive: wool, cotton, and leather are all good choices. These fibres burn slowly without melting.
Avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, and spandex. They melt and stick to your skin if they catch fire, which can cause severe burns.
Skip loose, flowing clothing that can drift into the flame. Tie back long hair and remove loose jewellery. A little preparation here goes a long way.
Fuel choice affects burn time, flame size, smoke, smell, and safety. The most common options for fire spinning are:
Β
Never use petrol, diesel, or alcohol-based fuels. They’re far too volatile, burn hotter, and are genuinely dangerous.
Store fuel in a sealed, clearly labelled container well away from your performance area.
For all our fire props we recommend pouring fuel directly onto the wick rather than dipping. The shape of the Buugeng, Halfgeng, and Fan makes dipping impractical, and pouring gives you more control over saturation.
Aim for a wick that’s fully saturated but not dripping. If you see fuel running off, you’ve used too much. Let the wick soak for about a minute before lighting so the Kevlar absorbs the fuel properly.
Before lighting, spin off any excess fuel over your fuel dump area or a safe surface. This is the single most important step to prevent burning fuel droplets flying off mid-performance. Give the prop a few firm spins until nothing more comes off.
Always fuel well away from your spinning area, any ignition sources, and spectators.
A safety spotter is someone who watches you while you spin and steps in if something goes wrong. Always have at least one. More is better, especially for public performances.
Your spotter should:
Agree on simple hand signals or verbal cues before you start, so they know when to approach, when to stay back, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Where you spin matters as much as how you spin. Before you light up, take stock of your environment:
Remember: you can stop spinning at any time. If something feels wrong – the wind picks up, someone wanders too close, you’re losing focus – extinguish and reset. There’s no trick worth forcing.
Once your Kevlar is fueled, excess fuel has been spun off, and your spotter is ready, you can light the Kevlar. Give the flame a few seconds to establish before you start moving. This prevents the flame from blowing out as soon as you spin.
Stay aware of your surroundings throughout your routine. Keep your distance from people, flammable surfaces, and low ceilings. If anything catches fire, including your own clothing, stop spinning immediately and extinguish it.
When you’re done, place a fire blanket or damp towel over the flame to put it out. Never wave the prop to put it out.
Fire spinning rewards preparation. Respect the element, and it can be part of your practice for years to come.

Do you want to dive into the world of object manipulation fully? Then we recommend getting buugeng. This prop, also called s staff, has a more extended history than halfgengs. The tricks are more explored and different approaches to create with them developed over time.
Are you a beginner who likes fans, dancing or juggling but it’s also curious what the world of object manipulation has to offer? If you are at the beginning of your flow journey or have a fan spinning background, then we believe you will enjoy our halfgengs more. They have a more enjoyable learning curve and plenty of similar tricks with fans. Many people find it easier to dance with them, and you can use many movements and tricks from other props.
Β
On the other hand, why not get both? If you already tried spinning four buugengs, aka quad buugeng, we recommend getting four halfgengs to explore more object manipulation possibilities. You can also choose a different amount of halfgeng & buugeng to explore quad buugeng spinning from a whole new perspective.
The minimum amount is always a pair. You can order our products in different quantities with a discount – we like to support quad buugeng tech, group training and creations or other experiments with multiple props!
No. We differ from other buugeng sellers by creating Non-magnetic buugeng/s staffs. It means that buugeng is one piece and is not foldable. The main advantage is that whenever you drop it, it stays together, and you can pick it up and continue flowing. It is also perfectly balanced to the centre and more suitable for quad buugeng spinning as no magnets are affecting your tricks. The main inspiration for this design is the shape & weight of a Pyroterra Lighttoys LED buugeng. Our buugeng is perfect for those who plan to protect their precious LEDs while learning cool tricks. It comes with a handy bag so you can travel with it comfortably even if it’s unfoldable.
No, we don’t sell LED buugeng. The unique thing about our buugeng design is that it fits the shape and the grip of LED buugeng from Pyroterra Lighttoys! This way, you can safely practice your future performance and tricks before you invest in LED buugeng. We highly recommend checking the led FT programmable buugeng from Lighttoys.
There are plenty of buugeng/s staff tutorials for all levels on Youtube for free! We highly recommend the tutorials for beginners from Colin Peterson focused on basics and fundamental motions.
